Encaustic Paintings by Lisa Renee Wilson Opens in Wellness Arts Gallery

Untitled Encaustic Painting by Lisa Renee Wilson

Lisa is an awareness artist who believes in blurring the lines between studio art and the art of everyday living.  Here she explores the subtle images possible through the encaustic painting.  Encaustic is an ancient technique of painting with hot wax.
~~~~~~~~~
Join us for a reception of the artist in the Wellness Arts Gallery Friday, August 2nd, 2013 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.  The exhibit runs through September 30, 2013 and is open for viewing during "Cafe" hours.
Artist Talk and Reception
On Friday September 6th, 2013 between 5:00 and 8:00pm Lisa will be in the gallery to discuss the medium of encaustic and her current work.
Lisa Renee Wilson is an awareness artist who believes in blurring the lines between studio art and the art of everyday living.
After obtaining a degree in psychology from Indiana University in 1999, Lisa went on to study wellness, yoga, and meditation. She noticed that each path, while interesting, seemed segregated from her experience of day-to-day life. Her desire to more deeply experience the spirituality of the mundane and to creatively share what she was learning led her to the arts.
As a self-declared awareness artist, Lisa's primary desire is to be mindfully aware and in creative play with the wonders of this moment. Through ongoing play with mixed media, she discovered encaustic (hot wax painting) in 2011. While she continues to create using a variety of materials, she finds herself often returning to encaustic art. This form of expression not only allows for the integration of many of the other mediums into one spirited piece, but also invites the artist and viewer into a dance with the playful nature of wax and alluring translucency.
Lisa is most interested in creating art that summons presence, contemplation, and engagement, instead of just being aesthetically pleasing. Through each piece, she invites the viewer to breathe with her as a conversation across time and distance.
Lisa lives in Bloomington, IN with her husband and two children, who serve as excellent sources of practice and inspiration. She regularly writes online, and periodically offers classes in meditative awareness, creative exploration, and beginning encaustic.
"SURFACES & TEXTURES" and Quilter's Comfort's Herbal Table
 Hello All,
Thanks for being here!  Things have been busy in the shop, and weekly friends stop in to say hello!  New relationships are being developed and some things that have been on the table for a while are finally taking on a more finished form.  We hope this means greater stability .
I am always in appreciation of my team!  Even as life sends us new situations to deal with, we are figuring out how to stay afloat and move forward and simultaneously manage to keep our sense of humor focused lovingly on the present.  We have  regulars that stop in to chat about gardening, share pictures and ideas about food in general.   Some of it will show up on the Herbal Table.
When visitors leave expressing how good the shop feels to them, we know that it is a reflection of us, the teas and all of the other products.  We know that people take some of that feeling home with every purchase.
Ai Takahashi's wonderful photo exhibit is coming to a close and in a few days we will hang the fiber art exhibit mentioned below.
"SURFACES & TEXTURES", an exhibition of fiber arts, opens Friday June 7, 2013.  Opening Reception is 5:00pm to 8:00pm in the Wellness Arts Gallery located in Patricia’s Wellness Arts Café, 725 West Kirkwood Avenue.  “Surfaces & Textures address the concept of surface design and structure. This first annual exhibit seeks to promote the appreciation of fiber art and support the creative development and continuance through artistic interpretations.
On July 5th, first Friday, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm the Wellness Arts Gallery reception for “Surfaces & Textures” will feature fiber art demonstrations through out the evening.
“Surfaces and Textures” exhibit runs from June 7th to July 31st.
Wellness Arts Gallery visitors will be able to sample a delicious variety of herbal treats.  Foods will include Spicy Ginger Mint Cake; winner of the “Best Tasting Cake” at the 2nd Annual Architectural Cake Contest accompanied by Quilter’s Comfort’s locally sourced Lavender Tranquility tea.
In June, Wellness Arts Gallery classes and workshops in Fiber Arts, Mask making and Paper Arts begin.  Programs include programs for youth and adults.
The Wellness Arts Gallery is located in Patricia’s Wellness Arts Café & Quilter’s Comfort Teas at 725 West Kirkwood Avenue (at the western entrance of Arts Row).   For information call 812-334-8155.
AI TAKAHASHI PHOTOGRAPHY
Friday April 5, 2013 "Native Land” Photography of Ai Takahashi opens in Patricia’s Wellness Arts Gallery.   Opening Reception is from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
Ai Takahashi, visiting scholar, says that landscapes are at once events of the earth and the stage on which our human lives evolve to become our histories.   As the layers of our lives accumulate, just like the geological beds of the earth, our existence becomes rooted in its layers.
 Rural agrarian life (inaka) has long stood in juxtaposition to an urban existence, to a world overflowing with information. But now the idea of inaka as “an ordinary farming community,” struggles to sustain itself.  In my work I seek out the voices of people living in such communities. While tangible, their voices are not to be found in textbooks or the news media. Still, collectively these modest voices represent the grounded history of these small farming communities.
 Life in these rural villages, rooted in the community members’ sense of responsibility for place, provides an abundance that I find prescient.  Inherent in village life is gentleness and tranquility, a severity and awe, a pantheistic prayer to god as the whole of creation.  On my travels I search for the roots of Japaneseness through an exploration of human agency and disappearing cultural traditions.
In the fall of 2009, Bill and Glenda Breeden bought a $500 Buick and headed to Mexico with their D50 Nikon within easy reach and a laptop to download the photos. Eight thousand miles and three thousand pictures later, they settled back into their cabin in the Owen County woods. They've selected a few photos of their sabbatical/second honeymoon adventure to share-enjoy!
The main focus will include experiences with the energies that we try to portray when talking about Earth, Air, Water and Fire; or about the Four Directions and Above and Below; or when we talk about the energy of the chakras as they exist in the world; or about the radiant heart anchored in the center of the body and radiating in all directions. Presenters will share experiences that have been important to them and each class will include experiential sharing as the presenter (or facilitator) leads a short meditation/visualization/imagining.
Dear Friends,
The February meeting for "Connections" will be February 9th, Thursday, at 7 pm. Chris Haynes has graciously volunteered to share his experience and lead this session. He will focus on chakras, subtle energies and the associated mudras (see following description).
'Chris Haynes will present an introduction to our subtle energy system from the perspective of Yogic science, with emphasis on the principle chakras (energy centers) and their relation to the five-fold division of subtle energy (pranas) and the five elements. A sequence of 10 hand positions (mudras) will then be introduced that are associated with these chakras, subtle energies, and elements, along with basics of conscious breathing. Used regularly, these constitute a profound technique for activating and purifying our bodies subtle energy system and deepening our connection with our environment.
This provides an introduction to Datta Kriya Yoga, a distillation of ancient Yogic wisdom by Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji, who has qualified Chris as an instructor.'
All are welcome! The location is Patricia's Wellness Arts Café. A $5 donation is requested to help support the space and pay for any materials. I hope to see you there. Dave Parsons. For information contact me at dashparsons@bluemarble.net.
